Pros and Cons

HP ENVY 13

Strengths

It's a lot of laptop for your money in terms of what you get not in terms of size and weight because it's very thin and very light
You get a pretty good deal with the core i7 quad core 15 watt ultrabooks CPU inside, 8 gigs of ram DDR4, and a 256 gig nvme SSD
The Microsoft precision trackpad is definitely a plus and it's a nice looking screen that's surprisingly bright, often 4k displays particularly with HP
Battery life on this will depend on when you get the full HD or the 4k display option, but it has a 53 hour battery which is healthy for your premium ultra book
The laptop has pretty good banging on some branded quad speakers which is a thing that HP has been doing

Weaknesses

You can't upgrade the RAM after the fact because it's soldered on
The rubber strips along the bottom are difficult to remove and may need to be replaced
It doesn't have Thunderbolt 3, but USBC offers an unprecedented display out hubs and all that sort of thing
Opening up the laptop is a bit of a pain due to the adhesive self-destructing rubber strips
The thermals are not perfect, with the laptop sometimes getting too hot to touch above the keyboard area

Dell Inspiron 14 Plus 7440

Strengths

This has been a nice pleasant surprise, especially a good bank for the buck here we like to see in 2024 when laptops are so expensive
sharp brighter than expected display
a Sleek lightweight design
a nice solid overall performance here with good graphics performance again with that Intel arc graphics
outstanding battery life
it has a comfortable keyboard and touchpad

Weaknesses

the ram is not upgradeable, that is pretty much part for the course here in 2024
it has HDMI 1.4 not the more Modern Standard 2.1 which would give you more options
you're going to have to contend with that fan noise reaching as high as 53 maybe even 54 DB which is quite noticeable under load
the speakers I would say are surprisingly good not the greatest speakers I've ever heard but pretty good for this price point in this category
the ram is not upgradeable that is pretty much part for the course here in 2024 and it has HDMI 1.4 not the more Modern Standard 2.1
