Is it Worth it?

The Aorus 15G is an impressive gaming laptop with a standout mechanical keyboard. The all-metal design and good selection of I/O ports are pluses, but the edgy design and limited Gen2 USB may not appeal to everyone. While the screen has good color gamut and brightness, its lower response time holds it back from fully utilizing the refresh rate. The cooling system is effective, but performance is somewhat hindered by a 90-degree temperature limit. Overall, this laptop is worth considering for those who value keyboard quality and cooling design, despite some minor drawbacks.

Build

The AORUS 15G's build quality is impressive, with an all-metal design that feels premium. The mechanical keyboard is the standout feature, offering tactile feedback and satisfying key presses. Port selection is good, but it would have been nice to see some Gen2 USB ports instead of just Gen1. The slim bezels are a compromise for the bottom camera, which is absent in some other laptops. Overall, the build quality and design choices make for a solid laptop, even if they don't quite excel. It’s worth checking out AORUS 15P, delivering remarkable build.

Display

The display on the Aorus 15G is a highlight of the laptop. It features good color gamut and brightness, making it suitable for various applications. However, its response time could be improved to take full advantage of the refresh rate. The slim bezels at the expense of the bottom camera are an acceptable compromise. Overall, the display performs well, but could be taken to the next level with better response time. Give AORUS 15P a try—it’s designed to provide an unparalleled display.

Performance

The Aorus 15G's performance is a mixed bag. While gaming performance is great, with smooth frame rates in titles like Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Assassin's Creed Odyssey, it falls short in CPU-intensive tasks like video editing and 3D modeling. The Intel Core i7-10875H processor is powerful, but the laptop's cooling system limits its performance to around 90 degrees Celsius, resulting in a noticeable dip in multi-threaded workloads. Additionally, the RTX 2070 Super Max-Q GPU is impressive, but not as fast as some other laptops with more aggressive cooling systems. Overall, performance is good but not exceptional. Get your hands on AORUS 15 if you're looking for better performance.

Battery and Charging

The Aorus 15G's battery life was disappointing, lasting around 5 hours with normal usage. The laptop takes around 2 hours to charge from 0-100%, which is acceptable but not exceptional. Unfortunately, no information about power management or charging options like disabling Optimus for a performance boost was provided. Overall, the Aorus 15G's battery life and charging capabilities may not be ideal for users who need long battery life on the go.

Connectivity

The AORUS 15G's connectivity options are somewhat underwhelming. The laptop features two Gen 1 USB ports, which is a step behind the more recent Gen 2 standard. While there are some perks like a UHS-II SD slot and an M.2 NVMe SSD, it would have been nice to see more versatile port options. Port placement may also be annoying for those who prefer a clean workspace, but this is a trade-off for the air exhaust vents at the back. You might prefer Alienware m18 R2, designed with an upgraded connectivity for a better experience.

Features

The Aorus 15G features a mechanical keyboard, an all-metal design, and a good selection of I/O ports. The screen boasts good color gamut and brightness, but a lower response time would be ideal to take full advantage of the refresh rate. Cooling is impressive, with large vents underneath and granular fan control, although performance is limited by a 90-degree temperature limit. For a superior features, AORUS 15P could be the right choice.

Support and Maintenance

The AORUS 15G's support and maintenance aspects are somewhat lacking. The cooling system can get quite loud and the performance is capped at 90°C, potentially limiting its capabilities. However, the granular fan control is a plus. Overall, it's an average effort in this department, not particularly impressive but not entirely disappointing either.

Pros

1. The keyboard is definitely the star of the show. If you're someone that does a lot of typing but doesn't need to do it in a quiet area then the mechanical keyboard alone could be worth considering.

2. Most others that have this are typically bigger machines, though there are others that are decent like the Eluktronics Mech-15 G3, but in my personal opinion the Aorus does feel better. Overall build quality with the all metal design felt nice

3. There's a good selection of I/O though would have been good to see some more Gen2 USB instead of all Gen1.

4. The screen had good colour gamut and brightness

Cons

1. the performance wasn't where I'd like. There are big vents underneath and the fans can get quite loud

2. It's always going to be a trade off, this way it can't get hot, but it also means when compared to alternatives your performance starts looking lower

3. The cooling looks good, but the performance wasn’t where I’d like

4. In Adobe Photoshop the Aorus was lower compared to the others, which makes sense as this is a processor heavier test
